We have all heard the saying…”They have a smile that can light up a room” or “They have a million dollar smile” – “A good smile can warm hearts and open doors. Don’t we all wish we had that movie star smile? A great smile is one of the first things the other notice about people. The thing about life is….almost never is anyone blessed from the start with a perfect smile. I would imagine if you looked back on most famous people you would find that they all had help with those dazzling smiles.
The good news, it is even easier and faster to get the help you need to have the smile you have always wanted. Advances in orthodontic care have come a long way over the years making it faster, more discrete, more affordable, and convenient to get a straight white smile. In fact it has become so popular and that a record number of adults, even senior citizens have opted orthodontic care in the past few years.
Everyone says there is no such thing as a free lunch and it seems that is will hold true when it comes to getting the smile you have always wanted. According to our orthodontist St George Utah, You can expect a certain amount of pain and discomfort when you have those braces placed on your teeth. Following you will find a list of things that they recommend that can help you with the pain and discomfort that comes with wanting a perfect smile.
Step 1: You may need to change what you eat.
a. Most of the pain associated with braces comes in the first few days after placement, eating soft foods that do not need a lot of chewing can help. Try to eat foods that do not stick to your braces as well.
b. Paint and inflammation can be reduced by eating cold foods like ice cream or by placing an ice cube in your mouth and sucking on it. I personally like pop sickles, they are cold and you can suck on them for an extended length of time and you should never get tired of them.
c. Avoiding acidic foods and drinks like orange juice or grapefruit juice is best. Acids found in fruit juices especially can cause irritation and inflammation.
d. Sticky candies and other hard foods like jerky or chips are not good and can even cause damage to your new braces. Chewing on pencils and pens can also damage braces and cause discomfort to your teeth while wearing braces.
Step 2: Use Oral Treatments to Alleviate Pain.
a. Tylenol or Advil and other over the counter pain relievers will help with the pain. Be sure to follow the directions when taking pain medications. Taking more than the typical recommended doses can cause serious medical problems. Be sure to eat food with the medications and to drink a full glass of water or milk when taking the meds.
b. Topical anesthetic like Orajel or Colgate Orabase can numb the sore teeth for several hours and come in convenient mouthwashes and gels.
c. A salt water mouth rinse is a natural pain reliever for braces irritation. Add a tablespoon of salt into a glass of warm water, stir to dissolve the salt. Rinse your mouth with the salt water solution, swishing it around in your mouth for about a minute repeat as needed.
d. Hydrogen peroxide is an antiseptic so mixing it with water and using as a mouth wash is a great way to solve the problem. Use one part hydrogen peroxide and one part water rinse mouth for about a minute. The taste of Hydrogen Peroxide is a little unsettling so be aware and maybe try a little first to get a sense of what to expect.
e. All orthodontists should provide you with a sample of orthodontist wax. Orthodontist wax is used as a barrier between your braces and mouth. It is readily available in any drug store. Follow the instructions on application in order to get the biggest benefits from the wax.
Step 3: Alter Your Teeth Cleaning Routine:
a. Potassium Nitrate a chemical found in sensitive teeth tooth pastes protects the nerve endings in your teeth and can bring comfort to your teeth while wearing braces and for many other tooth related pain.
b. Change your tooth brush to a soft bristle brush. The softer the bristles on your toothbrush the easier it will be on your teeth and gums.
c. And finally just be gentle when brushing. No need to be hard and fast when it comes to brushing your teeth. Take your time be gentle and make sure each tooth gets the attention it needs. Be sure to brush and floss after every meal.
